New Report - Google Crushed Competition

It was good news all over for Google in a recent report from tracking firm Comscore.

Internet search queries were up 11% in February. That’s terrific news for all of the major and minor search engines. Google also widened its lead over rivals Yahoo, MSN and Ask.com to 42.3% of all searches conducted on the Internet. This is truly amazing.

This is up over last year when Google handled a mere 36.3%. Yahoo and MSN were down 3 - 4% each.

Some very interesting comments from the Wall Street types:

“We expect Google’s increased market share in search queries, and better monetization of queries to lead to increased share of ad dollars relative to its competitors” in the first half of 2006, Merrill Lynch analysts Justin Post and Lauren Rich Fine wrote in a research note on Tuesday.

Google could eventually capture a 70 percent market share, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Jordan Rohan.

This one is exactly what I was thinking:

At the same time, Rohan noted that market share data does not always correlate with the ability of companies like Google to generate revenue from Web searches.

For example, Rohan noted that Google revenue rose 20 percent for the third quarter, even though the volume of searches on its site were down during the period.

Very interesting stuff.
