NBC: Every program has to have a broadband component

Is it possible that the Dinosaur media is starting to get it? Ad Age reports a speech by Jeff Zucker, CEO of NBC in which he said every program has to have a broadband component or a mobile application.

We are going to the upfront in the next few weeks with that being our mantra. The franchise on NBC will all be about broadband and wireless applications. It’s our entire approach to programming and our major selling point as we head into the upfront.

Some examples of the TV to Net convergence:

  • A pact with Touchstone Studios to offer NBC show “Scrubs” on Apple’s iTunes platform
  • Summer “mobisodes” of “The Office”
  • Offering viewers of Bravo’s “Top Chef” an opportunity to buy the products on the show using PayPal’s mobile text-to-buy application.

While I’m not sure interactive TV shopping is all that innovative (they’ve been trying that crap for 10 years now), the other stuff is mildly interesting and hopefully is the start of something good. Maybe someone online can help them develop better content for their shows.
