I came across a terrific, month long post on WebProWorld titled Who’s Making Money with Affiliate Websites. It’s a collection of advice and examples about making money with affiliate programs.
Here are some of the important points that I’ve gleaned from the 6 page post:
- Like everything else in life that pays off, successful affiliate marketers have to work hard to make a lot of money. In fact, one affiliate manager said that The top earners are those that have taken an interest in our service, request support (which is always provided) and are proactive in selling the solution. Pre-selling is an important aspect of affiliate marketing that everyone should master. The potential is there for everyone - you just have to be prepared to put in the effort. This makes sense.
- That being said, do your homework. My biggest piece of advice before you spend any money on getting your affiliate website up and running is take time, a good amount of time, to research what you’re going to do and create a marketing plan. Then choose programs you wish to promote and reach out to the affiliate program managers and ask for any pointers they may have and ask affiliates as well for some pointers.
- Support from your affiliate merchant is also important. Aside from a great product at great pricing, pick a program that will provide you support and help you make money with them.
- You need to select products/services that fit your visitors, and that you are comfortable promoting, and selling.
- I hate to sound like a broken record, but people agree with me that looking at your competitors’ sites and finding out what you can do better, cheaper or with a particular uniqueness is a great way to start putting your site together. Having good, relevant content gets the visitors there in the first place so you can sell them stuff. You want to build pages designed to attract the people who are most likely to make a purchase. It seems simple, but realistically it’s not done the right way very much.
- Experiment with different programs, site design, ad placement, ad and media types and action types (Pay-Per-Sale, Pay-Per-Lead, Pay-Per-Click, etc). and
- Diversify your income streams. Make sure they come from different networks, programs and action types.
- Don’t panic when you see a lot of money going out and a little coming in. Fiddling too much with PPC ads, keywords and ad serving will screw up your measurement and not give you enough time to figure out what’s working and what’s not. Micromanagement is necessary, but you have to not get carried away.
